With 35 years of service in the wedding industry, we have noticed more and more couples have been writing their own wedding vows. If you want personalized vows for your ceremony, then we highly recommend talking with your officiant to find out how to get started. He or she will have examples of vows that they have heard and presented, and they can give advice on the important subject. Ron, owner of Smokey Mountain Sounds, is a wedding officiant in the Smoky Mountains.

When thinking about personalized vows, there are many aspects to consider. First, think about your personality. Should the vows be funny, serious, heartfelt, or maybe all of the above? Do you want to write your vows together as a couple or separately? Do you want to surprise your fiancé on the wedding day?

What about writing short simple personalized vows followed by the traditional verbiage? This is a popular choice. Whichever you choose, your wedding day is all about you and ultimately you can be as creative as you wish.

Writing Personalized Vows

Vows are an agreement and a commitment to each other. Start out by declaring your love for each other, make promises, and add a personal touch. For example:

The declaration of love – “Ron, my heart is filled with love for you.”

A promise – “I promise that I will respect you, and I will be there for you in all times, both good and bad.”

Personal touch – “You came into my life when I was in the midst of chaos. I thank God for giving you to me to help me find clarity.”

Furthermore, is there something you want to emphasize like family, fidelity, or individuality? It is thoughtful to include special details about your relationship like where you first met or where you first kissed.

Culture is another aspect to consider when writing personalized vows. The Irish Blessing, for example, is increasing in popularity.

Irish Blessing

“May you never steal, lie, or cheat, but if you must steal, then steal away my sorrows, and if you must lie, lie with me all the nights of my life, and if you must cheat, then please cheat death because I couldn’t live a day without you.”

Remember, your wedding is for and about you and your fiance. Your story is important for you and your guests. If you don’t want to incorporate it in the ceremony, you can always include it as part of your introductions or somewhere else in your reception.
